Oliver Township, with assistance from Spicer Group of Saginaw, received the "Outstanding Planning Initiative" award by the Small Town and Rural Planning Division of the American Planning Association at the 2007 National Planning Conference in Philadelphia.

The award recognizes the thoughtful long-range plans adopted by Oliver Township to address the growing need to develop renewable energy facilities, such as wind energy, in their community.

The first step began in 2005 when the Planning Commission drafted a master plan that named renewable energy development as a primary goal. Soon after, the Planning Commission amended its zoning ordinance to permit utility-scale wind turbines. Then, in November of 2006, a developer submitted a site plan proposing the construction of 27 wind turbines. Using the newly adopted plans, the Planning Commission voted to approve the site plan. Oliver Township is located in Huron County, Michigan.

This video is a brief "virtual tour" through some of the turbines built in the northwest area of Oliver Township.
