In the Final episode of the series Al-Khalili turns detective, hunting for clues that show how the scientific revolution that took place in the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe had its roots in the earlier world of medieval Islam. He travels across Iran, Syria and Egypt to discover the huge astronomical advances made by Islamic scholars through their obsession with accurate measurement and coherent and rigorous mathematics.

He then visits Italy to see how those Islamic ideas permeated into the West and ultimately helped shape the works of the great European astronomer Copernicus, and investigates why science in the Islamic world appeared to go into decline after the 16th and 17th centuries, only for it to re-emerge in the present day.

  • Undoubtedly it is a Great presentation.Islam was never a fanatic religion but a source of knowledge, wisdom and inspiration to build the Scientific and knowledge based modern civilisation.Still the Holy Quran is the guiding fource and light to the fundamental modern science and humanity. We need to re-discover in this 21st century so that world people could taste it's fruits again. Thanks again BBC forum and microman780.

  • i don't like the term "Islamic" quoted every single time...he could very well say: "Arab". By using the term Islamic to refer to sciences he immediately refers to religion which could not be clear since there were Christians back then speaking Arabic and studying in Arabic! Good job, though.

  • @polka23dot hai Polka what r u eating ? are u eating POTATO as all foolish POLS. thats why your brain is not working. Don't poor your spoison on others. Think with your stupit brain and tell me why did christian church kill Galilio ???

  • The Muslim Arab world does not produce single manufactured product of sufficient quality to sell on world markets. Arab productivity and literacy are the lowest in the world. Nowhere in the Arab world is a world-class university, true democracy, respect for human rights, or a responsible media. Ralph Peters described the Arab Middle East as the world's first entirely parasitic culture because “it imitates poorly, consumes voraciously, spits hatred, exports death, and creates nothing”.

  • @Grand7007 wrote: @polka23dot Oh really??? Have you lived in those times to ask them whether they were muslims or not???

Most of them were Christians. Very few were devout Muslims. Modern Muslims Arabs are, according to UN, the most illiterate people on earth. I believe that they are also the most violent and intolerant. Being violent and intolerant is Sunna - the emulation of blood-thirsty bandit called Muhammad.

  • @Grand7007; European science was not impeded by Christianity because Christian theologian, St. Augustine (354 – 430) claimed that science and faith cannot contradict each other. If they appear to contradict it means that either scientific data or the bible was incorrectly interpreted. Islam declined in the 11-th century after Al-Ghazali published The Incoherence of the Philosophers. He argued that "Allah's hand is not chained", so there is no point in discovering the alleged laws of nature.

  • @Grand7007; Christians and Jews were dhimmi slaves in Andalusia. Thousands of Jews were killed in Muslim pogroms. This is why the Christians bravely fought against Muslim colonization and expelled all Muslims from Iberia.

Christians became backward when Muslims conquered Egypt and banned export of papyrus from Egypt to Europe. Papyrus was as important as paper and computers. When Europeans learned how to make paper, they left Muslims in the dust. Muslim science and technology are bad jokes.

  • @polka23dot did they tell that !!!!???? looooool
