The Transformers along with Spider Man and his Amazing Friends, GI Joe, Jem and others were all done by Sunbow/Marvel Productions. While the Animation was outsourced to Japan and South Korea, all the stories were written/storyboarded in the States, unlike say, the American version of Robotech which was truly a re-edited Japanese cartoon

Actually, the Transformers were origionally created by a Japanese toy company (I believe it was called "Takara").

The 1980s Transformers U.S. TV cartoon series was actually made in Japan, and dubbed into English for U.S. broadcast.

It lasted 3 seasons in the U.S.A., but in Japan it lasted 1 more.

The U.S. comic book company "Marvel", bought the rights to make a TF comic, around 1986.

If you watch the ending credits of the 1980s TF series, you'll see a lot of Japanese names there.

Transformers was released at the same time in Japan and America. Japan retaining the personalities and special abilities that Budiansky came up with but changed some of the names.

The cartoon was not created Japan. Presumably Sunbow has a lot of Japanese employees. Don't know. It was originally in English and then dubbed ino Japanese. It lasted for four seasons in America. Japan ignored the fourth season ("Rebirth") and created a further three seasons - Headmasters, Masterforce and Victory

    Sorry. No.

The original toys were created in the 70s by Takara and sold as Diaclone and Microman. Some other toys like Jetfire, Shockwave and the Deluxe Insecticons were created by other companies.

The Marvel comic book actually came first, the writier Budiansky creating many of the names, personalities and special abilitlies for the characters for Hasbro. The name Megatron was turned down originally because it sounded too scary for kids but Budiansky said it was supposed to be scary.

i was too small to remember this series but i know i had the VHS, it's quite brutal fighting (arms torn off) and such intense soundtrack just for moving rocks.

1:06 A better comeback to Kanok's smart mouth yapping would be "Shut up! Or I'll ram my fist down your throat!"

Where did they come up with the names for the humans? They don't sound like Earth names! Zaru? Kanok? Exetor? These guys must be from an Earth-like planet or something.

That's Star Trek logic though, so I'll let that one slide as being a flaw in wider sci-fi, but there is just so much that is ill conceived or just never properly explained in this cartoon and the only explaination we're ever likely to get from the writing staff is a shrug and 'Its a kids show'

Kids are not idiots and 'Its a kids show' is no excuse for lazy, half-assed writing

Don't you love how the robots speak the same language as the people who just crash landed on their planet?
