Competitions may be inherently flawed because music making is an art, not a measurable science or sport. Judges will always have their own ideas about what constitutes exceptional playing and in the end, there can rarely be one absolute "winner" in such a subjective art form as music. Of course, if technical problems plague a performance, that will be a significant factor, but in most cases contestants come to a competition with solid technique already in place so the judges are really voting on the intangible elements such as sound, sparkle, stage presence, pizazz, emotion. Given that, are competitions fair? Are they healthy for a developing musician? I think they are. Watch my video to find out what I think the real benefits of competitions are.

And if you are so inspired to enter or watch one for yourself, check out the Youtube Video Flute Competition at www.banddirector.com/contest.

  • I've never heard such an ugly sound from flute as comes from the Beat Boxing flutist. Horrible sound; and he's to be a judge? That's just sad.

There is no such thing as a fair competition; it's always inherently flawed and mostly a waste of time. Music should be be an art and real artists should have their own standards; how can one have a contest if there are a variety of artists?

  • Rexicano:

I actually like the flute beatboxer and would be interested to learn to beatbox...something out of my comfort zone.

  • For expressive non trad playing I like Rashaan Roland Kirk and Ian Anderson in early Jethro Tull. Even Eric Dolphy is nice with his breathy tone but the intonation sometimes rubs me the wrong way.

  • Roland Kirk is GREAT and Ian, too.

  • I like to join the Youtube Contest division II, for age 13 and over foreign people, I am just 13 now, yay! But I don't have any 'creative' pieces, what can I do? Should I change my classical flute piece into Jazz version or blues version? Time is short - 18 days left before round 1 submission.

  • flutelearner12: be creative, think outside the box, and I look forward to seeing your submission!

  • I completely agree with all that you have said. Creativity is the reason why music is so great: unlike in sports, there is no clear winner and loser, but each contestant gains something because they have prepared themselves by making an effort in practicing.

  • I don't know if anyone has told you this yet...

    But, you are truly talented,

    and ALSO, uniquely beautiful ;)

Thanks for sharing it with us.

  • I think this is a great message. As someone who has been in a couple of comps (albeit not flute, I only started flute last week but have been playing keyboards for a few years) it is a real disappointment when you don't get the result you would have liked because it feels like all the prep for it was a waste of time. We have loads of music reality shows here in the UK and I think it has a knock-on effect on everyone else. But essentially we are all celebrating the same thing, not competing.

  • Excellent vlog on a fascinating topic. Most of the benefits you describe are not specific to competition though. The same benefits might be gained just as easily through simple performance, without the need to manufacture winners and losers. What is it specifically about creating a situation that will divide people that makes competition worth it? If, according to that old speech you didn't give, there are really no losers, then why create them at all?

  • lol loved the vid

  • I wish I had a mentor like you. Thanks for making the connection on youtube. I have benefit a lot from your masterclass videos.

  • it depends on your personality. if losing is going to knock you down so hard that you can't get back up, then maybe a competition is not for you. for the type A personality it may be the thing. i'm a reformed type A. i prefer clinics, sessions, and festivals. it's the same thing, but in a more nurturing setting. even a studio class setting can be competitive although there is no prize. in the end being satisfied is what matters. the type A's will always be in competition mode, even at a clinic.

  • I fully agree with your points of view....competition is healthy if you see it as a healthy challenge.
