This is part three of a complete WPIX-produced "USA Tonight" newscast from Monday 1-16-1989, the fourth observation of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
These two segments featured local stories that were shown only in New York, and to those who watched WPIX on cable or satellite. Tonight, there was time for only one local story: the police search for a subway rapist. Weather follows, then a break, and sports concludes the program.
Regular anchor Brad Holbrook is subsituted for by Marvin Scott, then and now WPIX's senior correspondent/fill-in anchor. Scott also handles a brief weather forecast, as regular meteorologist Bob Harris had the holiday off. The late Jerry Girard, WPIX sports anchor from 1974 to 1995, is also seen in this clip. This is a scoped aircheck, though a promo for the Sally Field film "Norma Rae" is included.

@wiedep - When, I may ask? Would you be saying it was more a "grate" station?

@wmbrown6 was never a "great" station - i know i worked there

Also R.I.P. WPIX's sports department. Something tells me Jerry Girard, wherever he now is, is weeping over the descent of a once-great station.
