Er, your exhaust hole is too big. It seems the ideal area is about 1/5 of the combustion area. It looks like you have used 1/2 the diameter of the outer can which gives 1/4 area of that can. Use a hole a little less than 1/2 dia of the inner combustion can. You will find the draught will force earlier and more forcibly resulting in a hotter and faster flame. Using a thin tin base for the top will also speed up time to full draught.

You may be better off with a turboflame lighter for that mate, believe me, I've tried and got my fingers burned ... literally!

I've worked on this type of burner with success as long as wood was dry. But, I found that too much heat was being sucked from the fire when using wet wood and so it was difficult to actually build the fire to a level where the flames were large enough to force the ventilation. Have you managed to load the burner pot with wet wood that will fire without constant attention by slow feeding of wood splinters? I'd like to manage to get a full fuel pot without twenty minutes attention.
Great Info as always thanks.
