http://live.pirillo.com - http://facebook.com/chrispirillo - Dylan feels that the iPad is a step back in content consumption, due to the fact that there is DRM all over it. We've tried so hard to move away from the DRM environment. He points out that the Marvel Comic Book app takes away the fun of trading comic books with your friends as an example.

  • It's not the publisher or author of the eBook that is saying you can't view the eBook on any device other than an iPad. It is the eBook distributor that is applying that use restriction.

The publisher & author don't give a hoot what device you use to read the eBook. They just want you to buy the eBook & not violate the copyright.

When was the last time you bought a paper book from a book seller who tells you that you can only read that book while wearing the special glasses he sells you?

  • The way to defeat DRM and restrictive use licensing, it to stop buying such products.

Instead, buy the CD, DVD or paper book. They cannot legally stop you from selling, lending, or giving away the CD, DVD or paper book you purchased.

  • Many people seem to confuse DRM with the restrictive license that the DRM enforces.

DRM is merely a system (typically involving encryption) that makes it harder for you to violate terms of the use license.

But even if the product were sold without DRM, you'd still be legally bound the restrictive terms of the use license.

They're not selling you the file or other container that holds the digital content, They're only selling you a license to use the digital content.

  • DRM is the death of old style gaming, and DRM is unreasonable honestly. 'Access methods that are per time period biases' is not a fair/intelligent argument for or against DRM, since you never buy any specific item and thus no ownership arguments, just access arguments.

What the issue is DRM is unethical and so is pirating, but I'll back the pirates first because There is far less sharing, even 'legal' sharing and things are suffering. The everyday consumer is retarded and will accept shit.

  • It's amazing to watch the internal struggle between his inner tech geek and apple iFan tendencies.
