TIPHANIE YANIQUE is the author of How to Escape from a Leper Colony. She has received numerous awards, including the Boston Review Fiction Prize, a Rona Jaffe Prize, a Fulbright Scholarship, and a BOCAS Prize for Caribbean Literature. She has been listed by the Boston Globe as one of the sixteen cultural figures to watch out for and named one of the "5 Under 35" by the National Book Foundation. She is currently a finalist for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award. Her fiction, poetry, and essays can be found in the Best African American Fiction, Transition Magazine, American Short Fiction, Callaloo, and other journals and anthologies. Tiphanie is from the Virgin Islands and is a professor in the MFA program at the New School. She lives in Brooklyn.
Our monthly readings happen every Second Monday at the Franklin Park Bar and Beer Garden in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. We feature emerging and established fiction writers, memoirists, poets, storytellers, and comedians (and the occasional musician). Whenever possible, we draw from the local talent pool. And we love to showcase a wide range of voices, reflecting the diversity of the Crown Heights community.
Franklin Park, our venue, is a true neighborhood bar, where oldtimers and newbies kick back in a leafy courtyard and two indoor areas.
The series has been recommended by the New York Times, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, Time Out, the Village Voice, New York Press, The Brooklyn Paper, and other publications. The L Magazine gave the Franklin Park Reading Series a 2011 Brooklyn Bar Award for "best readings."
