CCA Orchid Island Yami Traditional Dwellings

Orchid Island is located at the junction of the Southeast Asia marine low pressure system and the Northeast Asia continental airstream. From July to November, it is typhoon season and the island is often hit with strong winds and heavy rains. Its climate has imposed restrictions on architecture. Thus, the traditional dwellings of the Yami exhibit very unique features. From a distance, all one sees of a Yami home is its roof. That is because it is semi-submerged, extending about two to three meters below ground.
