This passage is married to the situation. The Pharisees considered themselves not fathers, but like our politicians they saw themselves as Gods. Jesus referred to the word father in which the people were revering the corrupt politicians. So do not refer to them as the heavenly father as their is only one.

This is the understanding of the original church and is over 2000 years answered.

Not only he prohibit the use of father. He bars the use of both Rabbi and master. If like so, Jesus is demanding that no man take on the rank of teacher. That would include all the names that imply the role of a teacher. Doctor, Principal, Pastor and even Physician because a Physician is a Doctor of medicine. Also he denounces Abba as it is the most intimate word for father in his language. In Orthodoxy it is known that Christs intention was not to eliminate words from the dictionary.

In context Jesus was in the temple confronting the politicians of that province.

First he exclaims to the crowd. (Summary)

Do not follow the works of these men, for they love to be called rabbi (teacher).

As Jesus exposed their love not for their responsibility, but their title Rabbi.

"You are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher and you are all brothers and call no man Father for their is only one in heaven"

"Neither be called master for you only have one master the Christ."

So who was christ then exactly.....we are to only have one God. I always kind of knew RCC was messed up, whorshipping virgin mary ect, so many rituals and symbols. Who was Jesus exactly then...
