It's that time again in Portland as a 2 week tradition is underway where railfans & their families come out to relive the magic of steam, and a look at one of the world's favorite and famous steam engines, the Southern Pacific Daylight #4449 is in charge on the 2nd weekend of Portland's annual "Holiday Express", the 1st weekend had the Spokane, Portland & Seattle(SP&S) #700 leading. The Daylight was the focus as I made a visit to Oaks Park for the 2nd year in a row to see this beautiful steam locomotive and for the first time ever, I got a chance to ride this train with scenes from the baggage car & in the observation car which will be in part #2. SP #4449 recently returned from more than 2 months in a roundhouse in Minneapolis and before that went to Owosso, Michigan for Railroad Days where the Daylight being cared for by the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation(ORHF) & The Friends of SP #4449, and other famous locomotives including the Southern Railway(SOU) #6166 under care by the North Carolina Transportation Mueseum in Spencer, NC got together for the first annual event. It was the first trip for the Daylight to anywhere past Chicago in more than 30 years and brought a bunch of history to not only midwest railfans but to the railfan community as it was beginning to grow with more people having an interest in trains. 2009 was a historical year for the Daylight & millions of people saw her as she traveled across the country to Michigan for this event. Now she is back home and doing the 2nd weekend of the Holiday Express after returning to Portland in late October. Now sit back & watch the Daylight & the ride!! Enjoy!!!
