  • I heard Lyle do this the night that Jerry Garcia died, at Red Rocks amphitheater here in Denver. You could have heard a pin drop. Just Lyle on guitar and a cello player. There was not a dry eye in the crowd. Incredible moment.

  • This is my favorite version

  • Besides The Dead (obviously) this is the best version of the song. I'm really feeling this. Very mellow, laid back, type of cover. Good job and thanks for sharing this with us.

  • @apg61521 ...an nobody will cry when you're cut in half!!!

  • Lyle Lovett really nailed this song. It's my favorite cover of this song.

  • @DeanAllman That must have been beyond awesome. This is a great version of this tune. I can only imagine the reverence of the crowd that night. And at Red Rocks? Insane!

  • The thing with Lyle's and The Crow's version is that they change the mood of the song. It's a much more bittersweet story the way they do it... Kinda like when Lesser Birds Of Paradise did You Are My Sunshine.

Sometimes a little change of tempo can change a lot of things and this is one of the instances that, personally, I happy to like. Love the Dead and the original version, but the slower ones like this just fit my "mood" better.

  • @TheFinnymonster

What's the difference between a banjo and an onion?.............Nobody cries when you cut a banjo in half!

  • Man... I soooo wanna like this. Great song covered by a great singer and musician, but this cover is an injustice to the spirit of the song. The elevator music version....
