Every sunset like this (Jan 08) we are treated to this spectacular display. Most of the 'bats' featured are the black flying fox, which co-habitate at certain times of year with the more migrant little red flying fox. At these times the Yeppoon Ross Ck mangrove colony swells to more than a million in number. The blacks are big - wingspan of approx 1m. The colony has a nursery, maybe we could learn from their care. Some people want the flying foxes out, little do they realise their tourist potential and their crucial role in pollinating trees.

  • Hello, my name is Steven, and I work for Prism Video Productions in Indiana. I am putting together a video montage for the Muncie Symphony that is displayed while they perform. Once a year, the symphony performs an educational concert for around 2,200 third and fourth graders in Indiana. The theme for this year’s concert is animals, and I was wondering if I could get permission to use some of the footage you have shot? It would be greatly appreciated, as the concert is only a week away.

  • @PVP0310 Hi Steven, no worries, kids are the future and if they learn to be in awe of nature, then terrific! Would love to see the montage you make. Hope the concert goes great. Cheers, john

  • Serasia,

they are awesome. Flying foxes are SO much bigger than their little bat cousins. Our main road goes through the colony with the inland side the nursery when babies are being born. Awesome things.

  • @Wollemiwanderer Thanks John!

  • Wow, that is really cool. We don't have that many bats where I live. When I was studying in Taiwan, at dusk I'd see some bats fluttering around. It was really cool. They were smaller than these guys though and their wings were more fluttery.

I thought they were birds, but I'm pretty sure they were bats.

  • I Live Here! Woo. there not that great and they stink like shit. lol.

  • dude it like they decide wich way they want to go feed rite ova the top of your head. Really cool
