It is interesting that everyone's perception of this song is so unique. For me it reminds me of returning home from college over Thanksgiving break and going out to my old haunts and stumbling upon old friends and that special someone that I never could forget about. The guitar melody of this song is so in tune with the image that it creates in my mind - I return to this song time and time again when I need a to step out of my current life and return to better days...
you got it all wrong.. Think of dieing and going to a bar you know. Maybe he was sick or what ever. Heaven is about friends and loved one and life. He feels good again.I love it just heard it for the first time. A friend had it played at his funeral and wow what a impact. What you wish the money. Think about it you feel good in heaven no pain no regret and just the feeling of home. What ever just my opinion.
@mountnhome yeah mon..i can see that. cool take. as with everything, i think we try to make songs that "hit" us work into our lives. it is a great song. search "clay pigeons" by blaze foley. whew. how do these guys do it?
@knottyrich I think of it more like, a guy has had a rough week, maybe feeling a little alone, and he heads to town, and realizes how many great people are in his life, and how everything is gonna be alright... Whatever the exact meaning is, it is REK's best tune as far as I am concerned.
what do you think??....i take it to be, like a drunk who got sober...then , for whatever reasons....decided to start drinking again....both the good and the bad from such a decision
The great Jamey Johnson to his left.

I think of it as going into a bar after a long bout with the blues and seeing someone that had died that you missed so much. The smile.

I always thought, from the first time I heard it, he was dreaming. Everything wrong with the world suddenly was all right.
