Cataract is the developing world's leading cause of blindness. In India, 5 million people suffer from cataract blindness. Cataract blindness is curable, and The World Health Organisation is committed to the goal of eradicating curable blindness worldwide by the year 2020.

The Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital (AJEH), in Bihar perform free cataract surgery on over 100 blind patients every day. This extraordinary hospital work tirelessly, in almost impossible conditions, to cure the backlog of over half a million cataract blind people in Bihar.

Sophie Gerrard is a Scottish photographer currently based in the UK. She began her career in environmental sciences before completing an MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at The London College of Communication in 2006. Gerrard's first major project E-Wasteland won a Jerwood Photography Award, a Magenta Award and was exhibited widely in the UK and overseas. Since then Gerrard has spent a great deal of time photographing in India focusing on contemporary environmental and social issues. Her work has been published by The Telegraph, The Guardian, Greenpeace International and Geographical Magazine and has been exhibited internationally. Gerrard is currently represented by The Photographers' Gallery in London and her work is held in the private photography collection of Sir Elton John.
