Given the importance of the piolet or mountaineering ice axe, it seems foolish not to take a simple precaution against a pretty obvious danger - dropping your axe! Assuming you're going to heed that advice, I recommend this choice: the Black Diamond Lockdown Leash. It's lightweight and simple, adjustable and comfortable. It has a few key features which make it a very effective safety tool, which I discuss in this short video.

  • I hated that leash; bought it and chucked it. In self arrest practice I have had the leash loosen and fall of my wrist. Also I found it to be too short. Great Video though!

  • @TaIk2Kevin Thanks for the comments. I have never found it to limit my mobility with the axe. I am actually able to length it sufficiently that my hand can grip the axe about 2 inches from the spike, if I so choose. But I know leashes aren't for everyone - a guide I know once told me, "leashes are for dogs."
