The Pad Abort-1 Test will be the first of a series of flight tests of the full Orion Launch Abort System (LAS), which is being developed by NASA, Lockheed Martin and Orbital Sciences Corporation. These tests will be conducted at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The LAS is a solid rocket motor system that provides a safe escape for the crew. The LAS is the first of its kind and is an extremely complex system that must, within milliseconds, be able to pull the crew module to safety away from the launch vehicle in the event of an emergency on the pad or during the initial phase of ascent.

  • Wow, cool animation. They even seemed to get the chutes reacting to turbulent airflow.

  • it is game like flight simulator?? plz anser the name:)

  • I am sure the launch abort system will cost more than the entire Falcon 9 rocket. If Lockeed Martin has anything to do with this than you know its too expensive.

  • Why is the LAS the first of its kind?

Is it radically different from the system used by Apollo or used on the Russian lift vehicles? They all do the same thing .... snatch the capsule up to parachute height downwind of the rocket.

  • Who thinks it real?

  • Do your research before opening your internet mouth. The chutes ripped off because the capsule was falling too fast. The programmer parachute didn't deploy correctly, which is a parachute designed to get the Orion to test speed first. The above video represents PA-1 a test of the LAS. It hasn't happened yet.

  • that was not the LAS test!
