BMW 1 Series. As the 3 Series has grown, it's become less recognizable as a descendant of the celebrated BMW 2002 (1968-1976). Enter the 1 Series. Smaller, lighter and more affordable than the 3 Series but with the same 230- and 300-horsepower engine lineup, the 1 Series promises to outperform even its brilliant big brother. According to BMW, the 135i will reach 60 mph in about five seconds and further distinguishes itself from the 128i with sportier handling and styling. Options will include variable-ratio steering and an iDrive-controlled navigation system. Look for the 1 Series in Spring 2008 at a starting price around $30,000.
