We had the top and front off of the 1915 Autopiano, so I recorded Ben pumping the bellows and playing Henry the Eighth. You get to see how the insides of the classic player piano work.

  • Cual es el nombre de ese rollo?

    What's name of the roll?

  • @danielfx870

The song is "Henry the Eighth." It is a pun on the English King's name, and the words are about a man who is the eighth husband named Henry married to one woman.

Lo siento, mi espanol no es muy bueno.

  • @danielfx870

It is an old "MelOdee" brand roll. Numero 1168

  • why are there bellows?

  • @iTrishh,

The player piano is powered by vacuum. The bellows pull air to create the vacuum. This air power runs the mechanical system and pulls air through the holes in the paper roles that tell each note to play. When you work the pedals, you are simply pumping bellows, not operating a mechanical device like a bicycle. There are probably hundreds of feet of tubing inside the piano to direct the vacuum to each key, to run the motor, etc.

  • indeed a cool video,

are the piano an player action restored?

it might be because of the camera, but I find the treble a bit loud and metallic sounding... if it's not the camera but the piano I advise to get the hammers voiced... It was a huge improvement in my piano

    thanks for posting,

    Niels

  • The piano is pretty much original, I don't know just what was all restored. It previously belonged to a man who was something of an expert--he even took care of the organ in the carousel at Idlewild amusement park here in PA. As for the hammers--it may be the camera, I used a digital still camera--not ideal for video/sound, but it could very well be the hammers, too.

Thanks for the advice, and the comment!
