This is my second animation using 3D Studio Max. I put a number of different effects into this 12 second animation. The environment & all of the objects were constructed from scratch. The materials for all of the objects are a combination of texture maps and custom created materials. For the lighting I used several Omni Lights and a few Target Direct Lights with Volume Light with custom settings. I added Volume Fog with custom Noise and Phase settings that change frame by frame giving the scene an animated fog effect. I animated gears moving in the first room, curtains blowing in the second room have a wind force that moves. A flex modifier was added to give the ripple effect. The candles on the walls each have an Omni Light added with animated adjustments in intensity changing every 10 frames to give a slight flicker effect. On top of the bookshelf in the second room I created 3 tubes with Splines that have self illumination effects added along with Omni Lights that flicker. On the balcony I created torches using a Sphere Gizmo with Fire Effect customized with special parameters for the effect. The only plugin I used is a free one called Greeble for the jutting out shapes of the bricks.
I used many different shapes, Splines, modifiers, Space Warps & effects to create this scene but I wanted to keep the description fairly brief. I have to refine my camera smoothing techniques as it swivels around.

  • Thanks, from start to finish and by that I mean from the time I modeled all of the structure, props, did all the materials, effects & animation it took about a month. The camera is a bit jumpy. I did not use a free camera, I used a target camera and placed it on a spline path.

  • Ah ha you're amazing xD

I hate 3DS Max, I can't use it well, but by all means it can do amazing things like you just showed xD

How long did the rendering take? I would assume quite some time? Also, for the little tour, you used a free camera, no?

  • Very cool! :O
