Thank christ! This is the first time I've ever seen this explained clearly!
Got to be Cornwall. Britain is this the best place to surf. Friendly vibe, proper ale, clean beaches: heaven!

Just keep popping...

@doned007 Yep that's right your hands and knees still have contact with the board but you're not coming up onto your knees first (as would be taught with the knees method). You need to use your upper body strength, meaning your arms and chest muscles, with the abdominal muscles swinging your legs into position. You'll still be using your lower body to an extent but the point is you're focusing on using your upper body strength to help pop up quickly.

this was randomly in my recommended videos.

hey odaglish, still don`t get it-- when arching your back, your hands and knees have contact with the board or what? cause you say upper body but you totally ignore what happens with your lower body and i dont see your lower body hanging in the air..
i've been trying forever to surf on a shortboard. i considered giving up and switching to a 7' fish. but now im to the point where everytime i try to popup, both my feet land on the board but when i stand my board sinks into the water. but now that im getting closer i guess i shouldnt switch to a bigger board afterall as that would only be a setback.

@Damnedsoul53 Sounds like you're not getting enough speed up initially to stop the board from sinking. Try doing some extra paddles when you paddle into the wave (even when you think you've caught it do an extra paddle or 2 to make sure) and put more weight on your chest to give you greater spead. Switching to a bigger board won't necessarily be a setback, especially if it helps accelerate your learning. Maybe try a few sessions on a longboard, nail the points mentioned above & try again.

I've always been popping up with my toes on my longboard. can i do that if i get a longer shortboard? i cant pop up with my knees. (17 yr boy)

@Secretasianmane As long as your toes still hover over the tail of the board when you paddle in then yes. Otherwise, you're gonna have to learn to pop without the toes. Good luck!

Awesome, I am interested in starting to surf. Any suggestions for a short board (preferably not very expensive) for beginners.

@Pro5niPeZHD If you're a beginner, try a longboard first - you'll learn quicker and won't give up in frustration as many do who try to learn on a shortboard. Longboards may not look as 'cool' as shortboards, but you're not going to look cool falling off all the time! Check out our vid on longboard pop-ups.
