I added a 500 GB HDD to the Asus Transformer keyboard dock while keeping the overall structure the same as well as keep all the internal electronics. Did not remove a thing. I de-soldered things, rearranged them, and re-soldered them into their new places.

I also added in an on/off switch to turn off the HDD whenever I'm not using it to save the battery life. When the HDD is turned off, everything behaves like it was before this mod.

Check out on xda for more info about this.

Also, here is the link to the HDD I used from amazon.

  • To the person asking about a how-to video, please understand that if you still don't know what to do after watching this video, then it's best for you not to try. This mod really is not meant for newbie modders.

  • @haxxorsheep, haha copycat. If you have the switch, you will pretty much have the same battery life as before. When the HDD is off, power consumption should be the same as before.

  • FYI, people, I've since sold the dock shown in this video and have made another mod to a new dock but this time with a 750GB HDD. I must say, having such a large storage space is a godsend :-D

  • do you need to safely remove before you turn off the switch?

  • @goodintentions2011 i have been thinking of doing a similar mod as this with the solid drive from an ipod as i think the power consumption will be lower. will give it a try and let you know what i come up with :)

  • I, great idea, only one question, it's a 2.5 inch (notebook) or 1.8 inch (netbook) HDD?

    Greetings.

  • @TheBuckChoi No it will not if your using the harddrive your usb port cant power another device. If you put a switch on as he did. It will turn off the hard drive then you can use your USB port again. If you do this you can loose 8 hours of battery life. I have done this mod and its nice but not for noob modders.

  • Does the usb port still work..?

  • Wanted to say thank you, this ties in PERFECTLY with all the misc uses I have for the Transformer. I use it for everything; as my cookbook, for my scope tracking, quick photo editing at shows as well as my on site lighting scripts.

What's been missing is a form of permanent storage for movies and the like when traveling. I've been looking on/off for something like this for awhile. Thanks again for having the nerve to attempt this and the consideration to share it w/ the rest of us :)

  • Good and creative. Awesome
