An E coli outbreak in Japan that has affected at least 66 people claimed its fourth victim today. A raw beef dish served by a restaurant chain is believed to be responsible. The beef had not been inspected for bacteria and contained E. coli strain 0111, which produces verotoxin and can cause hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS). HUS symptoms include hemolytic anemia, acute renal failure and a low platelet count. It has a 10% mortality rate.
