http://www.eurocarnews.com - Pioneering recycling strategy The Volkswagen-SiCon process
The much-acclaimed Volkswagen-SiCon process recovers materials from end-of-life vehicles for use as a valuable source of raw materials. Following treatment, hard plastics, rubber, textiles, glass and metal residues replace primary raw materials and thus contribute to protecting natural resources. Apart from the ecological aspect, this process presents an economically attractive alternative for secondary raw material users as raw material prices continue to rise.

I'm living in a country that was not so long time ago classified as "2nd world" - Poland. While we are developing I've noticed that old used cars became cheaper - At a beggining it caused massive import of used cars from western countries where nobody wants them, but now people want to have newer, more expensive ones thus selling their old cars even cheaper. Same thing happens - People scrap a lot of "good" cars with good parts, because nobody wants them anymore.

@10yroldcarlover Unfortunatley in developed countries labor and space needed to remove, store and then sell is usually worth more than part itself - Combined with short life of a car there is small demand fot those used parts - Cars are often scrapped despite they are still in working condition or can be fixed and made usable again - It is our "need" of new cars and high labor costs that make shredding good parts profitable.
