While walking our dogs in our neighborhood, Mountain View, California, we discovered a mother duck and her six baby ducklings. We ran home to get our cell phone to call animal rescue. When we came back, one duckling had fallen into the storm drain. Three more fell in while the mother was waiting for rescue. When the one community officer arrived, he was completely ineffective. He and a pedestrian eventually tried to remove the storm drain cover, only to drop it on the baby ducklings. This was after I was trying to protect the mother and her two on-ground ducklings from a second neighborhood cat. Everybody stood around looking. I ran back, hopped in the storm drain, and plucked out all four ducklings.

Still, nobody would come to rescue them and I knew that the neighborhood cats, racoons, or even dogs would get this team of ducks long before they reached the sanctuary of the creek. So, we took matters into our own hands. We captured the remaining ducklings and walked all of them to the creek, all while the mother duck followed us.

We saved the whole family and reunited them at Stevens Creek!

It felt really, really good to do this.

  • Good rescue! Every spring we get many orphaned or abandoned ducklings at our hospital. Sometimes well-meaning people pick up ducklings, not knowing that mom is hiding close by. Best to walk out of sight and give mom a chance to gather her brood. In this case, the ducklings were in danger. Thanks for your good work. By the way, never feed wildlife, especially not "milk creams" :) People food is not good for ducks. Five stars!

  • Thank you! Worst parts about the rescue:

Everybody let the ducklings go right back in the neighborhood after I instructed them not to, and we had to get them a second time. There's just too many cats in my hood, and I thought they'd never make it to the creek. The other bad thing was that my BF took the camera off the ducks right when the neighborhood guys made their move. The county guy was good for absolutely nothing!

    Thanks again ~ Fer
