This clip from the 1917 California State Fair shows two steam trains colliding head-on. The clip was originally silent, however sound has been added to enhance the video. It is believed that this occurred on what is now the UC Davis Medical Center campus.

  • why that happening?

  • In the mid to late 1910's, there was an excess of these old steam-locomotives lying around. Event planners would put on spectacular crashes at public events to draw crowds using these extra locomotives. They were valued about as much then as we value cars made in the 1980's today.

  • It's interesting how they managed to sync up the sound. Obviously, the sound was recorded on phonograph style equipement being that there was no sound film back in those days.

I wonder if the tracks in that field were purposely laid out there just for this event.

  • This clip had no sound. I added it all. The hissing of the steam is actually me making a hissing sound; other elements were pulled from Public Domain sounds on the internet.

As the clip is a mere 8 seconds long, it didn't take long. The most complex portion was the timing.

Overall, I think the sound came out just right. Perhaps sometime I'll find time to add sound to the full clip.

    Cheers!

  • In 1917, this was probably the coolest thing ever. It's still high on the cool meter today.

  • this clip was a publicity stunt they were common in the 1900 today they are illegal because a train crash can be deadly

  • Nice job on the sound track dr2kk!

I am posting this comment July 28, 2011. It is less than a week away from this year's "debt ceiling crises" in the U.S. due August 2nd. So far: no agreement between President Obama and Speaker of the House John Boehner.

The locomotive on the right must be a Republican and the one on the left a Democrat. This video sums up the theatre of the absurd which is the state of Federal politics in America today.

  • The problem with these events is that there would often be red-hot chunks of shrapnel from the boiler that few into the crowd

  • Now the trains need a cigarette.

  • Poor Trains must have been Scared...

  • Awesome vid!

  • @TheDylanJoyce this video was filmed in 1913. they had steam locomotives in abundance at that time

  • Oh the things they did back in the day for entertainment. :P

  • Cash for Clunkers, WW1 style.
