Back in 1977 I was living in the midwest and Eddie and Richie (and Duke Jordan, Bird's favorite pianist, and others) were performing at a local club. They ended up having dinner at my house, courtesy of a musician friend who had toured with Eddie in the 1950s that I was living with at the time. After dinner we went to see them perform. They were great people as well as outstanding musicians.

He's always been one of my favorites, I am a huge fan of scat, vocalese, and the power of the human voice, and Eddie's creativity can still be appreciated thanks to these wonderful clips on YouTube. I did get to see/hear him live @ The Tin Palace - one of those small clubs on Manhattan's Lower East Side - joints like the Village Vanguard, Bottom Line, Village Gate, Sweet Basil's Sam Rivers & Joe Lee Wilson's Jazz Loft - all places within walking distance to my tiny apt. on Mott St - mid 70's.
