MEZZOMOMENTS, I love this clip; thanks for posting. But this isn't MAMIE SMITH! This is a scene from the 1939 film "Paradise In Harlem." SIDNEY EASTON is playing the piano and performing with BABE MATTHEWS! MAMIE SMITH is in the movie also, but she sang "Lord, I Love That Man" and "Harlem Blues" in the movie.
This film was NOT aimed at whites. So your light skinned jibe is not valid.
The ugly truth is light skinned black entertainers had an advantage over the dark skinned blacks - because racisim based on color existed among blacks as well as whites. This is well documented.
America doesnt have a disgusting legacy anymore than any other country. Bad things were done & still go on. It's the human condition. It's our job to make things better. But dont expect us to be ashamed of our country.
@McVouty Yup....no Smith here! ....unless body poundage was magically made to disappear. Mamie Smith is in a league of her own with her fantastic diction and pitch. John-Hans Melcher "theQuietDrummer"
@ReddzVoice Thank you! Helpful information, and well said (great clip--I agree).
Mezzo, could you change the title?

@McVouty It might be them... there is a good photo of them in Paul Oliver's book "The Story of the Blues". Thanks for the tip! This is great!

@JCJasion I think that's the best guess so far. It sure is NOT Mamie Smith.
The delivery is reminiscent of Coot Grant and Sox Wilson.
An what a great legacy we Americans have.
