Greetings from the Concordia University Music Department!
We have a vibrant, caring, and joyful community that makes music at a high level, and we would be delighted to help you become a part of it. Our goal is to provide opportunities for musical excellence in which each individual is nurtured. We hope you enjoy exploring the information, photos, and music on this website, which will give you a taste of the excellent music-making at CSP. We invite you to visit us in person, for a concert, recital, rehearsal, or to meet our faculty and students.
Music plays a large role in student life at Concordia, as an area of study and a mode of expression. The music curriculum includes courses in music theory and composition, history and literature, church music, music education, vocal and instrumental techniques, conducting, private lessons in voice, piano, organ, harpsichord, guitar and all band and orchestra instruments, plus a full range of ensembles. The faculty includes some of the finest artist-teachers in the Twin Cities. The Buetow Music Center features a 500-seat auditorium; three rehearsal rooms for choir, band, and chamber ensembles; 16 private practice rooms; four organ practice rooms; two electronic MIDI labs, including SMARTMUSIC technology; 16 faculty offices/studios; and a three-manual concert organ designed by Hermann Schlicker.Concordia became an all-Steinway piano school in 2002.
The CSP choirs, bands, and ensembles are open to all students, based onauditions held before each academic year and at various times throughout the year. The hundreds of performance opportunities each year include Friday afternoon recitals, campus recitals and concerts, daily chapel services, services at area congregations, and many other community functions.
Concordia vocal groups include the Christus Chorus, Jubilate, Chamber Choir, Opera Workshop and the Shades of Harmony Multi-cultural Gospel Choir. Christus Chorus performs major choral works and tours nationally (and internationally every 4 years). The group has performed for state and regional music educator conventions, national church gatherings, and with the Minnesota Orchestra. Jubilate performs in daily chapel services, special chapel worship services, Lenten and Spring Vespers Services and at area Lutheran churches. Chamber Choir is a select small ensemble that focuses on secular art music and folk/popular arrangements. Opera Workshop prepares fully staged, costumed scenes from selected operas. Gospel Choir is made up of students, staff, and community members and sings new arrangements of Gospel music and music of global cultures. Concert Band is Concordia's flagship touring instrumental group, performing standard wind ensemble literature at concerts, daily chapel services, and tours nationally. Other smaller ensembles include: Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Chamber String Ensemble, Flute Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Handbell Ensemble, Beginning Handbells, Woodwind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Saxophone Ensemble, and Chapel Band.
Music Scholarships ranging from $500-$5,000 are available for both majors and non-majors. For more information contact: Dr. David Mennicke at dmennicke@csp.edu, 651-641-8828
