The list of electric vehicles bound for the 2010 Detroit Auto Show grew on Thursday with word that the battery-electric Volvo C30 has been tweaked and will make an appearance in the Motor City. Volvo had announced the car last September but now says the new version "is a much more complete product."

"The new battery-electric C30 features a complete interior and full instrumentation, as well as enhanced battery packaging," said Lennart Stegland, director of Volvo Cars Special Vehicles, in a statement. "The first prototype helped us identify the main technological challenges without compromising the C30's personality. The electric C30 in Detroit is a much more complete product."

Volvo told Inside Line in September that the battery-electric C30 will launch for fleet use in Europe first. There are no plans as yet for the U.S. market.

Volvo on Thursday said the next step in the process is to roll out a factory-built series of test cars. The cars will undergo a two-year trial period beginning in 2011, it said. The 111-horsepower battery-electric C30 to be shown in Detroit can be recharged in about eight hours. Top speed is pegged at 81 miles per hour, with 0-60-mph acceleration in less than 11 seconds. The car has a range of up to 93 miles, Volvo said.

  • @elBufi

The nice thing about this car is that the battery is place in middle console area so that it doesn't take up much utility space of the car.which has been seen ever in E-car design. Other cars such Plug-prius,hybird camry, leaf or Volt all end up very awkwadly reducing the trunk space.

  • Volvo made a solid progress in E-car development, and is also very prudent in marketing. Yes, play safe

  • @linkdarkshadow. It takes ~8 hours from completely flat using normal wall socket power. It can be charged in ~30 min with the right equipment. For daily commute it's actually very convenient. You get home, plug it in, and get on with your life.

  • @starlight1946 It's not in commercial production. It's in what you can call beta testing. They are gathering data from real world usage.

  • I loved the last gen C70 but nobody has seemed to notice them ;)

  • Wonder how it runs when its freezing cold, snowing heavily and on icy roads. What the price? How many can afford it in 2010? Can it pull a trailer? Can it fit a family of more than 4?

  • pick me pick me. I'll do it.

  • probably the best styling from volvo ever. its not the best, but better than its other vehicles

  • That has to be the most boring car ever.

  • looks kinda nice though. if only it came in a gasoline version j/k
