One Big Family Chapter Twelve (Part III)

"I'm sure she's fine, Lottie," he said. "Come on, I smell dinner! Mmmmm...."
The next thing she knew, he was beside her, his arms around her waist, and lifting her off her feet. She screamed as he turned her upside down and tickled her mercilessly, leaving her breathless and laughing uncontrollably. All the time he did this he just grinned at her, and ignored all her protests. Finally, he set her down again and ran out of the room, her chasing after him. Eventually she found him back in the kitchen again, and she picked up the oven gloves and whacked him with them. He laughed and snatched them from her, pulling her into his chest and kissing her forehead.
When she had calmed down, he whispered "I love you" to her, which she reciprocated, and they hugged for a very long time, just loving each other's presence. She held onto him, as if her heart was telling her to stay with him, because she knew that this was where she belonged. Selena didn't want to leave him; she just knew she had to.
They ate dinner together at the table and watched The Simpsons together afterwards. Selena was happier than she had been in weeks, and it was because of her husband. She had spent the past few days planning how the evening would go, how she would act, and how she would leave, but now, it didn't seem to be working at all. All of her thoughts had been washed away, and just by him being here. It was amazing how love numbed the senses, she thought to herself.
After Charlotte was in bed they sat together on the couch, his arm around her and her head resting on his shoulder. They watched the news and listened intently when Joe's family were featured. Alyson had been drugged at a party and had an allergic reaction due to her diabetes, and were pressing charges on her ex-boyfriend Mark for spiking her drink. Nick had tensed up, feeling protective of his niece, and it had taken fifteen minutes for him to relax again. She'd convinced him not to call them, telling him that he'd say something he shouldn't, and that the family wouldn't want any visitors for a while yet. She told him that they'd visit on the weekend.
Before they went to bed, he whispered to her, "I promise you I'll never leave you again. I told you I'd be here forever, and that is a promise I intend to keep. Marriage is a commitment, so we'll always be together, Sel. Forever, that's how long I will love you for. So, I bought you this." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box. Inside was a diamond ring. Selena gasped. "It's an eternity ring."
A single tear rolled down her cheek as he slid it on her finger, and kissed her hand. "I love you, Nick. Forever."
"Forever," he agreed, and touched his lips to hers. This kiss was softer, more loving and gentle, and she felt herself giving in to the temptation to stay with him. She had meant it when she said forever, and she was going to prove to him that they could make it work.
