times square howard johnson's.....
the times square hojo.....
my father first took us to nyc in the 60's (we went alot). i lived in richmond back then. hojo was probably the first restaurant in nyc i ate at. it opened in 1959. i was born in '55 so it was pretty new when i first went. after i grew up i couldn't afford to go to nyc again until the late 70's. the first time i bought my own ticket was on the train and it was 49 dollars round trip. i've been going back ever since. in the late 90's, early mm i went three or four times a year, now having to fly from key west and austin respectively. i continued to go to hojo's, usually for a coctail before i'd go see a show. i remember eating xmas dinner there one year, just for the experience. i also rode a greyhound to nyc once, from austin, just for the experience. i don't reccomend either unless you are looking for material to write. walking into the times square hojo was like walking into the past. although the accompanying article states the hojo will remain open, i captured these images sitting at the window booth a few months before it closed. my waitress had just moved to this country and had gotten the hojo job a few weeks in. here's more on the hojo's:

i just watched the film "fame" from 1980. there's a scene, that starts at 1:50:40, where irene cara is sitting in the same window as this video. the cool thing, is that nothing had changed.....
