Pembroke Fire Protection District

Pembroke Fire Protection District is a rural fire protection district located in Pembroke Township, the largest township in Kankakee County, Illinois and one of the poorest townships in the country. (35% live below poverty level. Even worse, 19% of them live at below 50% of that level.) Pembroke Township is located 60 miles southeast of Chicago on the Illinois-Indiana border. The department is made up of 18 firefighters, a Chief, a Public Relations Officer and a three-member Board of Directors. All positions are volunteer. They are a hard working dedicated team of men and women that put their lives on the line everyday to protect other peoples lives and property! The average age of the vehicles on our fleet is 20 years old.

We provide 56-square miles of coverage in the Pembroke Fire Protection District, which includes the Village of Hopkins Park that we protect daily. This area includes 2784 residents, occupied houses/apartments: 2,782 (1,878 owner occupied, 904 renter occupied) 3 schools (The Ida L Busch Elementary School, George Washington Carver Pre-School and the Lorenzo R. Smith Grade School), and 3 senior homes (Wild Wind Estates, Hickory Hills and the Pembroke Senior Citizens Center).

The following critical infrastructures are within the 56-mile radius of Pembroke Township that we cover. It does not include any other infrastructures that we can be called upon to cover, as part of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) 7 or the six surrounding counties and across the Indiana border*: AT&T Switching Center, located at the intersection of E 4000S and S 15000E (Northwest Corner), a Natural Gas Pipeline runs from St. Anne, IL to across the Indiana border along 6000S road, a ComEd Electrical Transformer Station located at 15000E Rd and 6000S Rd.; the following County Highways: CH 2 13000E Rd., CH 53 7000S Rd., CH 56 12750E Rd., CH 57 16000E Rd.; 2 USDA Rural Development provided Sewer System Pumping Stations and Generators located along 13000E Rd.; a Water Treatment Plant located on 4000S Rd.

*We have mutual aid agreements with several departments within a 25-30 mile radius of the Pembroke Fire Protection District. Four of these departments are in Kankakee County: St. Anne Fire Protection District, Aroma Fire Protection District, Momence Fire Protection District and Grant Park Fire Department. The other two are located in Iroquois County: Papineau Fire Protection District and Beaverville Fire Protection District. This adds an additional 14,511 lives and 13,056 structures that we are in part responsible for protecting on a daily basis.

There are an additional 12 departments that we respond to in Kankakee County and Iroquois as members of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) Division 7. We also respond to departments just across the border into Indiana, including Morocco, Lake Village and Schneider to name a few.
