Would like to get opinion about this item. It belonged to my Father-in-Law and inherited by my wife as a wedding gift to us. He narrates the story when he was a District (Civil) Engineer circa 1970s for the province of Romblon Island, Philippines, that one of his workers was able to acquire a few pieces from an excavation site sneaked out by a fellow local native who was working as part of a crew of an excavation/retrieval of a sunken galleon in the Strait of Tablas in the 1970s during the time of President Marcos. It was believed that the expedition/excavation was commissioned by the former President's wife Imelda Marcos, but as all stories about treasure hunting of that period were attributed to her and her husband. At that time, as my Father-In-Law narrates, he himself has seen the excavation team cordon off that part of the bay, seeing divers go down and bring up some items but because of the strict armed security were not able to inspect, inquire, or even question the activity. The worker sold this item to my Father-In-Law for a few hundred pesos, if I recall it about Five Hundred Pesos.

The province of Romblon Islands (San Fernando) is the recent location of the tragic capsized vessel ship "Princess of the Stars" which happened on June 21, 2008.

If anyone has an idea about this item, I would greatly appreciate your inputs. We would like to have the item authenticated with the Philippine National Museum for so many years since we got it, but we just accepted the fact that it is an authentic "Kitchen Ming." For any experts out there you are welcome to comment and contact me for information.

Thanks

  • Thanks for the info. Yes, it was from a sea excavation (treasure hunt) from a galleon ship in one the islands of Romblon, Phillipines. I just don't know the name of the ship nor year of the shipwreck, but the shipwreck was definitely found near one of the bays in those islands that the Spanish and Chinese ships passed by to trade their wares.
