.................................................................
JOGO DO MALANDRO

Jogo do Malandro previously known as Jogo do Chapéu was developed by Contra Mestre Rodrigo of Associação de Capoiera Engenho da Rainha (ACER Capoeira) around the Summer of 2004.

In the past some Capoeiristas used to play capoeira around money thrown by bystanders into the street rodas. The Capoeiristas would use all their skill and Malandragem (trickery), Malicia (deceit) to try and pick up the money with their mouths...

In 2004 during one of many summer performances by ACER Capoeira at The Download Festival in Donnington Castle - UK on a very hot day, C.Mestre Rodrigo suddenly stopped the roda grabbed a hat from one of the students and placed it in the middle of the roda. (some people put money into the hat thinking we were busking for cash, we returned the money to them and laughed about it because that wasn't the intention behind the act). He told the students to play for the hat and try and win it by placing their head in it. In the early stages students would grab the hat and place it out of reach of each other etc. The game then developed when C.Mestre Rodrigo said that you could only get the hat by being upside down in a type of headstand or inverted movements.

Over the years the C.Mestre created more rules and used many different Berimbau rhythms for the game and it was initially known as Jogo de Chapéu (the game of the hat). The game has continued to develop and is now called Jogo do Malandro in respect to the classic tradition of street rodas in Rio and the dress code of the Malandros.

The rules are now even more complex, because you cannot touch or move the hat while playing Capoeira around the hat. Players are not allowed to have all four limbs at the same time on the floor when getting the hat. And no other part of your body except the head to be used to pick up the hat.

Great body control and creativity is needed. Not forgetting the MALANDRAGEM.

Remember that all the normal rules of a capoeira game still apply such as trips (Pernadas/ Rasteira) , head butts (Cabeçada) , take downs (Quedas) and all the rest of the tactics and traditions.

Jogo do Malandro is an example of ACER Capoeira and C.Mestre Rodrigo continuing the traditions without compromising the essence of the art form...
