This is one of James' earliest recordings, from 1953. There's another one on here, probably his first recording, with the Gospelaires from 1950. Hard to believe he was only like 19 years old on the first recording, and 22 on this one. His voice had that trademark sound you heard in his late recordings all the way back then.

This may have been James' best background group. You can hear his early idols Robert Anderson and Eugene Smith. But he's got a cry all his own. The New York disc jockey Joe Bostic made this a local hit. Bostic (Mahalia's New York promoter) was one of the first to see that James would be a super-star. Until then he didn't get much respect from people who expected gospel men to have voices as huge as Alex Bradford or Joe May. Doesn't Imogene make herself felt with just eight or nine words?
Yes, Imogene REALLY does! It's almost haunting and I LOOOOOOVE it!
