This is a cruise of 11 miles from the end of the Oxford Canal at Hawkesbury Junction heading north along the Coventry Canal (Main Line), around the south west outskirts of Nuneaton, to overnight moorings at Atherstone. Along the way we pass Charity Dock and Marston Junction, the start of the Ashby Canal.

With the two canals running parallel for a short distance at Hawkesbury the Junction forms a 180 degree U-turn between the Oxford Canal and the Coventry Canal towards Atherstone. We negotiated this with the canal equivalent of a three point turn, nudging off the far bank to get the pointy end heading in the right direction.

You can see a couple of pieces of steering unpleasantness in here. The first is at Bridge No 13 where I appear to head for the winding hole rather than the bridge hole. I'm putting it down to wind smear. The second is below Bridge No 22 and I'm putting that one down to wake turbulence caused by the very speedy boat that passed us heading south.

We stopped for a pump out at Valley Cruises near Bridge No 27. As we left the heavens opened, unleashing another monsoon and causing filming operations to be suspended for an hour or so.

  • great video i live in the white cottage on your opening shot next time stop il make you a cuppa

  • It's a date - cheers mate

  • This is a really nice video. I live near that area and I have walked between the Marston Junction section and the Coventry basin. I was trying to see if I could recognise some of the areas. It's a little difficult to keep track of where you are and it would be nice if you could put some captions on the video for different stages. The music goes really well with this video.

  • Cheers matey, I've wondered a few times whether to add captions and decided against it on the grounds that people watching these videos would be fellow canal anoraks with Nicholson or Pearson guides to hand. Give me a few days and I'll post a captioned version to see how it goes. The music is from Kevin MacLeod at incompetech dot com (YouTube wont let me put the real . in!)

  • I guess the camera is on the bow and zoomed out to not see the boat. The only problem with recording all this, is everyone can see all the "bumps" lol - like the fly on the lens.

Well I'll be doing Warwickshire ring from Napton so if all goes to plan a time lapse diary will appear in a few weeks, so we'll see some of this journey in reverse.

  • The camera is fitted with a wide angle lens and is zoomed out just enough to not get the front fender in the shot. In wet weather with the rain jacket fitted I have to zoom out a little further or all the footage looks like we're always leaving a tunnel!

    I hated that fly too

  • Do you video it all in real time and then edit it to drop the frames out? What speed is it, about 10times?

Ive done a but using flix and a webcam which comes out ok although its limited by my webcams performance ofcause.

  • I love PIGandPINEAPPLE's videos of the canals! Great work!

Did you steer the boat into the wall emerging from the junction in the beginning or was it just me? It looked violent on the video but perhaps it wasn't too bad at normal speed!

  • I Cycled From Hawksberry To Donnithorn Ave Nuneaton =]

  • cool

  • my old house 5.18!! thanks mate happy memories!
