This is another in a brief new series. William Barclay Masterson, known as "Bat" Masterson. was born in Quebec in 1853. The family moved to New York, then to Kansas, where Bat and his two brothers left the family farm to become buffalo hunters. Bat did some Indian scouting and fighting in Texas against Kiowa and Commanche Indians, then got involved in his first gunfight (over a woman, it is said) in 1876. Masterson was shot in the pelvis, but he survived. The other man did not. In 1877, Masterson joined his brothers in Dodge City, Kansas, as a law man, and even fought alongside Wyatt Earp who was sheriff of Dodge at the time. A few months later, Masterson was elected sheriff of Ford County, Kansas, but it only lasted two years. Later, he was in Dodge and saw his brother Ed gunned down by cowboy Jack Wagner. As his brother stumbled away with a mortal wound, Bat Masterson drew his pistol and shot both Wagner and his boss Alf Walker from across the street. Wagner died. Walker survived. For the next few years, Masterson made a living as a gambler, even visiting Wyatt Earp in Tombstone before the shootout at the OK Corral. By 1883 he had turned to journalism and began to write a weekly sports column. He worked for newspapers in Dodge City, Colorado, and New York City. He collapsed at his newspaper desk in New York in 1921 and died at the age of 67, one of the few gunfighters (along with Wyatt Earp) to survive those violent early years. The music may drive you crazy. It's three different renditions of the Bat Masterson TV theme song, rattling through your brain ad nauseum.

  • Another awesome show.

I used to subscribe to WildWest Magazine as in the picture at 0:22.

This western series is the best of them all.

    Peace.

  • Yes, I'm having some definite fun. I have seven more for this series stacked up ready to upload, but I don't want to drown my friends. I'm headed to Las Vegas tomorrow for four days of fun. Maybe I'll do them one-a-day when I get back. Peace and cheers, John
