...and by the time(months, years?) that the demand to see those pictures becomes so great that finally a decision comes down to finally show those pictures, then, well ...they've been destroyed for national security purposes.

If the pictures were released it would be a massive push toward prosecution because if you add images to the story it gives it ten times the impact. A huge majority would be screaming for justice.
