This is a trap in the Torre Attack (1.d4 2.Nf3 3.Bg5). It is one of my favorite opening traps; in the 2000 Chicago Open I won two games with it.

  • Why not Nh5 in 3:05 ?

If Qh4 - Bxg5, 2) Qxh5 - Bh6 and black looks cool. He can play d4 any time to open his bishops diagonal

    or Qh4 - Bxg5, 2) Bxh7+ - Kxh7, 3) Qxh5+ - Bh6 Black is still cool

    if g4 - Bxg5 (bad move)

maybe Bxh7+ first - Kxh7. Now Qh4,Qc2+,Nf3,g4 all are ridiculus moves. Black is still fine and can hold against white's threats (Bxg5,f6,d4 etc)

  • @obanoban That's quite a good suggestion actually...

    White should trade bishops on e7. 11...Nh5 12.Bxe7 Qxe7

Now 13.g4? looks like it wins a piece but after 13...f5! Black is better, the piece can't be taken due to ...Qg5+ and ...d4+.

13.Be2, attacking the N, is best. 13...g6 is forced. Now 14.Bxh5 gxh5 15.f4 might be a little better for White but Black's position has plenty of potential.

Still for Black, I'd rather avoid this trap with an early ...h6, than allow White to play this line.

  • After Ne5, black's best option is a6. The position is equalized here, so the Qa4 idea doesn't help much since you're going for a kingside attack with the Torre

  • @akkumeduri If White is allowed to play Ne5 and f4, that is what he wants. (In most positions Ne5 can be met with ..Nxe5 where white has to take with the d pawn and give Black a mobile center)

Objectively you are right, the Qa4 idea should not be dangerous, but it contains some funny ideas, another idea being Rae1 and then return the Queen to d1, and play for a center push.

  • I beg to differ. I don't think the Torre Attack is at all dangerous. My program, ChessMaster GM Edition analyzed the Torre, and found the refutation for 10. Ne5. Black can still safely capture the knight on e5. But, after 10..Nxe5, 11. dxe5, then Black can simply play 11.. Ne4 !! The only thing Black loses is a pawn, after 12. Bxe7, 12.. Qxe7, 13. Nxe4, ..dxe4, 14. Bxe4, ..Bxe4, 15. Qxe4 (1+/0)

  • @PrettyBoySexy2 Beg to differ with what? After 11...Ne4 White wins a clean center pawn, and if he plays decently afterwards he should win. It's the best possible move but it doesn't refute anything, it just loses slower.

if ur opponent hits g5..he cannot castle on the king side bcoz

the place where the king is placed will be bold..then it can be open

if he moved g5 he lets white to attack.. see..?? i hope u can understand tnx :D :D :D

  • i have been caught out by this move .
