Too Good To Be True (JB love story) Ch.41

Maddy sat on the bed in her room, reading a book she had brought along. Why she was reading when she could be playing in the ocean, she didn't know, but she just kind of felt like being alone.
She was reading 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak. The book was quite interesting; almost impossible to put down once she'd started reading. She was almost about half was through the book, when there was a knock on the door.
Maddy looked up from her book, at the door. She was so absorbed in the book, she wasn't sure if there really was a knock or not. When there was a second knock, Maddy put her book down, got up from her bed, and headed for the door.
"Yes?" She asked as she opened the door.
Her eyes widened when she realized it was Nick -- without Gabby on his arm.
"Nick?" She asked, slightly leaning onto the door. "Where's Gabby?"”
His expression was very serious, and he took a deep breath before answering.
"I..." He said, gulping. "She broke up with me,"”
"What?" Maddy asked, taken aback. Questions swarmed around in her head. They broke up? And GABBY broke up with Nick? How was this possible? She seemed to love him so much!
Silence passed. Neither one knew what to say.
Maddy was the one to speak first. "Why?" She croaked.
"Because..." Nick started, looking down at his feet and back up at Maddy again. He stared into her eyes. "She knew I had feelings for someone else,"”
Maddy's eyes widened, not knowing how to answer that. Could he be talking about HER?
Nick took a step closer. "I think you know who,"”
Maddy was still speechless. He cupped Maddy's face with one hand and took her hand with his other. They're faces were only inches apart.
This was one of the moments Maddy had dreamed of when she was still just a fan, watching from afar. Except in her imaginations, it was Joe instead of Nick. Now she'd met the Jonas Brothers, fell in love with Nick, and here they were. She thought about what had happened over the last week. And it was a LOT. She thought about how much it hurt her when Gabby became Nick's girlfriend. And now Nick was standing in front of Maddy, telling her that he and her sister had broken up. It was all so confusing.
Nick's face inched closer, letting go of her hand and slipping it around her waist, one hand still cupping her face. He closed his eyes, and she closed hers. They were going to kiss.
No.
"Nick..." she said, his face so close she could feel him breathing on her. "We can't,"”
Nick opened his eyes. "Why?" He sounded confused.
"I can't hurt Gabby," Maddy said, slipping out of Nick's grip on her.
There was no way Gabby could get over Nick just like that, and Maddy didn't want to hurt her sister like Gabby did to her before.
"But Maddy," Nick said, grabbing Maddy's hand as she was about to close the cottage door on him. "I don't understand. Gabby and I have broken up," He sounded genuinely hurt.
"I'm sorry," Maddy said, her eyes watering. She squeezed his hand before she let it go, and closed the door.
Nick stood there for a few moments before getting off the porch and walking back to his own cottage.
