The boys pictured in this video -- residents of the Vesnova Children's Mental Asylum in Belarus -- were about to be moved to an adult asylum where they would live segregated from society until death. Donations from supporters, and the work of hundreds of volunteers, allowed us to build a home for them, were they will receive care and skills training to help them integrate into society and reach their potential for independent living. In this video, the boys are on the terrace of their new home -- we "cut the ribbon" this past April. The boy speaking in English -- and thanking CCPI supporters for their help -- is named Sasha Levkin. He taught himself English using language CDs given to him by volunteers. As he has difficulty using his hands, his friends helped him with the CD player. You can read Sasha's story here: http://chernobyl.typepad.com/chernoby...

The singing boy is singing a Russian "toasting" song. This video was taken by Natalia Gnatienko, a student volunteer at Boston Univerisity School of Public Health, who conducted a research project that will help us improve the quality of our services to Chernobyl affected communities in Belarus and Ukraine.

  • wow! I was expecting Sasha to speak Russian or something , but his English awesome!

  • It's really bad this kind of thing happened in a part of the world that was already exceptionally cruel to the disabled. The Sociopathic "pursuit of success" really can seal our doom if unfettered.

  • He's very smart, handicapped or not.
