It's neither "toy" nor "red" - the German word is 'Luftballon' and 'Luft' just means 'air'. So by saying 'Luftballon' German people just mean the same thing like the English with 'ballon' do.

@serenitychaos2000 they don't HAVE to be red. I think that the German version is actually singing 99 toy balloons. But that sounds strange in English, because we refer to the ones for parties etc just as balloons. I may be wrong, I can't remember where I heard this, but either way, the assorted colours should be fine =D
