Vlog 9 or 30

Study Abstract:
http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/short/301/11/1140

Today question is: Why do studies show that religious people cling to life rather than non-religious people?

  • I have read all of these comments and haven't seen one that addresses the issue correctly.

Why do Christians want to stay on this earth for as long as they can? because God has called us to be witnesses to all the nations (Acts 1:8) and has given us the great commission. The longer we are here, the longer we have the opportunity to share our faith with our family and friends, and make an impact in their lives. its not because we're afraid or scared God is not real,

  • This isn't a good explanation because the person is on their literal deathbed. They are incapacitated. They aren't in a position to do much of anything at the point where heroic measures are being applied to revive them.

  • I wonder why this video got voted down so much.

  • Votebot idiots. lmao

  • The truth is clearly put out there. Religion is not a search for God but a road to run away from 'self constructed or percieved eternal damnation'. In short if you don't have made a meaningful peace with the inevitability of death, well you will be religious cringing everyday with fear of damnation.

  • lmao, I'm guessing not many go to your church with a marketing spiel like that. What an awful set of goals.

  • Ethics are the morality of a business or occupation. You are confused. Your reason to want to stay alive (acts 1:8) is a rationalization, much like your entire life likely is. If you believe god is all powerful and calls you to death when he thinks you're ready then quoting the bible to provide justification for medical treatment is like reading the owner's manual for the car that just ran you over.

  • It's funny because the survival instinct is the driving force behind evolution, and most christians don't believe in evolution...

  • Am I the only Atheist who trully wants to live forever? Any afterlife sounds fundamentally boring compared to an overview of history, I'd like to be around for the first Mars mission.I'd like to see our first Japanese president.

  • Believers are pussies.

It really is that simple. They fear everything - death, sex, drugs, rock n roll, living fully, etc.

  • @ThisAvatar My opinion is that believers have always thought more what comes next in the afterlife than non-believers. When believers feel that they are close to death, they marvel even more what comes next: "Am I really going to heaven or not? What's going to happen to me?"

The non-believers don't have such strong sense of belief in something, thus they are more concerned about their last moments in life. They probably don't want to prolong their suffering and thus they just let go more easily.

  • Why would Atheists, be less likely to want to extend their lives... when they believe this is all the have? I find that VERY interesting within this study.

  • I believe individuals may well have an interest in sustaining consciousness when they are close to death in order to share last moments with family and others before they leave. Near death may bring about a short period of mental clarity that can be encouraging and healing for witnesses. The sight of someone who is going to remain unconscious until death may have value to some, but I see no point in sustaining pain, nor in expenditures that might better serve the living.

  • cb90222,

I am sorry to hear of your mom's unfortunate suffering. I don't pretend to have all of the answers, quite the opposite in fact, but I do know without a shred of doubt, that God (as described in the Jewish and Christian holy texts)exists. How do you know!?You may ask me; and my answer cannot be adequately stated via simple logic. The quick version:I rebelled against God but found no peace;I came back to him and have a peace that I never knew could exist! This peace can only be experienced.

  • dizoda,Btw, my (christian) sister said she never did mourn or grieve for our mom b/c she believed & she jsut KNEW mom was gon go to "heaven"if that's the case WHY try to stop her from goin to "heaven" ?"If" it's "god's" wil to take some-one "home" then WHY go against god's will ? WAKE_UP SHEEPLE ! NO MERCY as I see it! Plain hard-hearted.

  • dizoda, how do you "preserve" some-one who's hooked up to a breathing tube & evrery other tube known to man ? My mom was 83 when she died & was hooked up to all that stuf & I watched her suffer for many days just layin there w/no response whatsoever but my sister (Chrs-tn) who had POA told the Dr. to do everything poss to keep mom alive. Even to the point of pumping her heart if nessesary which the Dr. said would have broken moms bone as she was nothing but skin & bones @ that time

  • rxlover86, maybe when you were a "Chr-tn" you never were near death so could be why you didn't fear it.
