Yes, "you think this is the only class we have."

I do give the students extra problems to work on. However, they are not for homework or for a grade. Students that need to do them will do them. Those who do not need to do them do not do the problems.

@irras88 We do examples and problems in class. Some students may need to practice more, but many do not need to.

The universe we live in is fascinating. Science is the study of the universe we live in. If I tried to force my students to do a bunch of boring assignments, my students would not be inspired. If my students leave my class hating it, I have failed. I have read a variety of books about homework. (The Homework Myth by Alfie Kohn, Rethinking Homework by Cathy Vatterott, and The Case Against Homework by Nancy Kalish)

I teach science. I do not give homework. My students do quite well without homework. I teach them how to ask questions and think for themselves. I tell my students not to just believe what I say but to look it up for themselves. I have students that look into ideas and topics from class on their own time without me telling them to do so.

ok i was going to present this in a school project about too much homework until the end. pooey.
There is no evidence supporting the idea that homework is helpful to students in any major way. As I tell my students, do not just believe me. Look it up for yourselves.

@MissThinkabunch I am NOT a teacher, but I am definitely a veteran student :). While I do appreciate your more hands-on and engaging style of teaching, I think that assigning NO homework is going a little bit too far. I learn best when the content and the teacher/professor is engaging but without homework how will I learn how to apply the things I've learned?

@MissThinkabunch Many homework questions I've been forced to do for assignments over the years have missed the mark though. Sure it helps me practice application, but most of the time the examples are so arbitrary and impractical that I don't even care to remember anything about it. I suppose that's why I enjoy the Computer Science field so much. More application, less useless arbitrary cases with questionable utility.
