This is unique footage of the great Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919).

He is seen at home, working on a canvas.

I'm just astonished it exists - I never imagined I'd see film of him painting - you even get a sense of his method of applying the oil to the canvas.

Also present in this footage are Renoir's son Jean Renoir, 14, who stands by to arrange the palette and place the brush in his father's hand, and Sacha Guitry, the man who made this film in 1915 and who appears midway through the film sitting down and talking with the artist.

A full description of the circumstances of the shooting of this footage and of those present can be seen at:

The young boy is Jean Renoir his son who will become later on a well know film maker for the French cinema, the man speaking to Renoir is Sacha Guitry.

I like the way it look at the camera at 2:06, his face expression and his eyes looking directly at us as if he was telling us something.

    hi arcsd195228

yes that's what i initially thought and then i heard the voice-over and heard 'jean renoir' and 'le plus jeune fils' and thought 'youngest son' - my lousy French no doubt - so thanks for the correction

yes, i have seen the footage of Sacha Guitry talking with Sarah BERNARDT - i think first in the documentary 'Sacha Guitry CEUX DE CHEZ NOUS Edition de 1952'

    hi Mirco

i was not really sure who the other people were in this footage so i looked again today at the documentary made by the grandson of the maker of this 1915 film (who appears here too) and the boy helping with the brushes is identified, as you suggest (thanks!) as Jean Renoir 'le plus jeune fils' (youngest son)

the part of the documentary on Renoir with this voice-over introduction can be googled up using 'Sacha Guitry CEUX DE CHEZ NOUS Edition de 1952'

    thanks again. appreciated!

Hi Nick, and thanks for sharing this amazing movie. You say the young fellw coud be Claude, the youngest son of Renoir (14teen at that time), did you take in consideration it could be Jean Renoir? The guy seems to me a little older then 14teen, he could even be 20.

i agree - YT is an amazing tool for coming across some of the most extraordinary film footage - things often i did not know even existed

did you see the upload of Monet painting at Giverny - i'm sure you have - i had the same reaction to that film as this

    :)
