The Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a herbivorous mammal that feeds mainly on bamboo. It is slightly larger than a domestic cat. Found in the Himalayas, southern China, India, Laos, Nepal and Burma. There is an estimated population of fewer than 2,500 Red Pandas, and their population continues to decline due to loss of habitat. They are part of the AZA Species Survival Plan (SSP) in which zoos the United States help breed and maintain the captive population for their survival.
