Everything is clear, at every level: every image, every harmony, every idea, every detail of an idea, every corollary drawn or thought provoked. We are left with the bleakness of landscape and the raw pain of VW's evident apocalyptic prescience...it does not go away from the music, and a hundred years later is a clear statement still. A masterpiece maturing in art's slow cellars....
