http://AviationExplorer.com - The DC-10 became McDonnell Douglas's first commercial airliner after the merger between McDonnell Aircraft Corporation and Douglas Aircraft Company in 1967.

The DC-10 was first ordered by launch customer American Airlines with 25 orders. The DC-10, a series 10 model, made its first flight on August 29, 1970. Following a flight test program with 929 flights covering 1,551 hours, the DC-10 was awarded a type certificate from the FAA on July 29, 1971. It entered commercial service with American Airlines on August 5, 1971 on a round trip flight between Los Angeles and Chicago.

  • Am I the only one who thinks the plane gateway a little too easy at 2:03.... And yet it flew at 500MPH at 41,000FT?? D:

  • American Airlines killed not only the dc10 but MD as well!

  • smells like a lemon

  • Sad end to a mighty bird.

  • Hate the people don´t like DC10. For your information although American accident in 1978, the major big airlines around the world continued flying with it and became in one of the best airliners planes ever. And I HAVE TO MENTION THAt MANY PEOPLE THING IS MORE COMFORTABLE THAN 747.

  • Was that THE EXACT SAME plane as in the commercial? Sad no matter what. AA flight 191 killed the DC 10...

  • I think airplanes are very fragil!, or is just that powered crocodile!.. A question. Did american's dc10s have a first class, o there was a lounge for passengers which paid a little bit and the rest was just economy class?

  • I started flying for American when they newly had the lounges in both DC10's and 747's, it was incredible and luxurious. Now it sucks flying for everyone unless

you are rich enough to afford first class

  • An eerie sadness seeing those excavation trucks picking away at the fuselage of such an icon of american air travel. But all good things must come to an end, even if the DC-10 had its issues, it represented the "Real" good days of what flying should be.

  • Great vid! I hate seeing airplanes being destroyed, considering my dad works for U.S. Airways :( I subbed. (Yes I know us airways never had dc-10s but its still sad to see them destroyed!)
