I have hunted high and low around the internet for a solution for this exact issue on WinXPPro. This fixed it for me.
So that means it's not a Mac issue.

Hey Marv,
Iam running windows Xp. Had to modify the backend as Iam using Coldfusion and the system was designed with php in mind. not too sure as to why the problem exists though but its not OS specific.

Hi, I was having the same problem.
Check your upload handler page - I put a number "1" on the page, outside the handler and it started getting response form the upload page. weird but iam not sure why that issue is there.

I solved it the same way, but I think it's a Mac issue, do you run OSX?
